Speech Recognition (SR) technology is emerging as a solution for automatically captioning and transcribing multimedia: videos, podcasts...even lectures.
During a two year research project supported by Canada's Social Development Partnerships Program, students with disabilities used a SR powered Hosted Transcription System (HTS) to convert digitized audio and video into accessible, Multimedia Transcripts. National Disability Organizations utilized SR to make online information more accessible and provided individual members with new technologies that addressed everyday accessibility challenges. Researchers also reviewed financial aspects of SR based transcription, including an evaluation of contemporary post-secondary services.
The project was completed on April 31, 2012. Follow the links to learn more about research results.
Project Outcomes:
- Hosted Transcription Service usage statistics and technical performance
- How students with disabilities described their experiences using HTS and Multimedia Transcripts
- Financial information about costs associated with HTS and a marketplace evaluation of speech-to-text services
- Technology innovations to improve SR transcription and captioning systems
