Hosted Transcription Service:

FAQ

  1. What is the difference between an uncorrected transcript and a corrected transcript?
The uncorrected transcript is the original result of Hosted Transcription Service (HTS), no human correcting has been done.  With speech recognition technology there is no way to get a 100% accurate transcript without human involvement, this is largly due to the quality of the audio recording, differences in the way individuals speak and terminology used.  A corrected transcript, in the case of the Youth Initaitive, has been reviewed by a human editor who is responsible for correcting misrecognitions made by HTS.
  2. Why do I receive only 5 hours of corrected audio?
This is a pilot research project, funded by the Office for Disability Issues to develop emerging speech recognition technologies that increase access to information for Canadians with disabilities. Being a research project, it has definite goals and funding limits. Built into the project is funding for 5 hours of editing per participant. After your 5 hours have been used up, you will still be able to submit files for transcription but they will not be corrected by our editors.
  3. How do I record a lecture? upload a recoding? view the transcript? correct the transcript?
A description of how to do this can be found in the Support Documentation portion of the Help section.
  4. Why did I get an email stating that my job is delayed?
It may happen that several people upload large files for transcription at the same time. If that is the case, then your file will be queued and will be transcribed as soon as possible. You are sent this message just to let you know that there has been a delay in processing.
  5. Why does the lecture have to be recorded using a headset microphone or lapel microphone? Why can't I use a tape recorder or cell phone?
Based upon our experience, we have found that the audio quality of recordings made with these types of devices is insufficient to give good transcription results. A good headset or lapel microphone is a must.
  6. Is Hosted Transcription Service appropriate for lectures in such technical subjects as mathematics, computer science, and physics?
Yes, you should still find the transcription valuable for such subjects. Remember that what you get is a verbatim transcript of what was said by your professor, be it in a history or a physics lecture. Formulas will be spelled out exactly as they sound i.e.: x equals three plus two divided by five.
  7. It's taking a long time to upload my audio file, what happens if I log out before the upload is complete?
If you log out before your audio file is fully uploaded you will have to start over again.
  8. Why is the corrected transcript not grammatically edited?
Our editors only correct mistakes made by the computer transcription service (spelling mistakes and words that have been wrongly transcribed) so that you receive an accurate, verbatim, transcript of the audio file you submit. They do not make changes to what was said or add punctuation.
  9. Why haven't I received my corrected transcript?
Our editors are working very hard to return your corrected transcript in a timely manner. Due to an overload of requests the editors may not be able to meet the desired turn around time. If there continues to be a delay please contact Janice Stevens: janice.stevens@smu.ca or 902.496.8178
  10. When I view the multi-media transcript in flash format the text disappears, however I can still hear the audio. Is there anything I can do about this?
Yes! Notice along the bottom of the screen an Anchor Text check box, by checking it the text will automatically scroll.
