Hosted Transcription Service

How to participate in the Liberated Learning Youth Initiative

As a participant in the Liberated Learning Youth Initiative you will help us test a research-grade speech recognition technology called Hosted Transcription Service (HTS), developed by IBM Research. Through this initiative, you can receive HTS-generated transcripts of your lectures as well as transcripts corrected by our editors. Follow these steps to ensure the project runs smoothly.

  1. Make sure the involved instructor knows he/she must record the lecture using a headset or lapel microphone.
  2. If you don't have an appropriate microphone, a disability support professional or a learning and development staff member may be able to help you find one.
  3. We recommend using a digital recorder with a lapel microphone to record the class. The below Olympus recorder and Olympus microphone produce good results for transcription.
    • - Olympus WS 700M digital recorder
      - Olympus ME 15 lapel microphone
  4. Lectures can be recorded to personal or classroom computers given you have the proper permissions to download recording software and to save audio. We recommend the free software Audacity.  You may have to contact your institution's technology department to setup the proper permissions.
  5. Once the class has been recorded you will log-in to your HTS account and upload the audio for transcription.
  6. The first audio you upload will be used to determine if the file meets our requirements.
  7. You are restricted to uploading one (1) audio at a time.  Once the audio is finished transcribing you will be permitted to upload additional audio. Do not wait to upload all your audio at once, i.e.: before exams.
  8. An unedited transcript will be available on your HTS account once your file is transcribed.  Within two days, our editors will correct any errors and you will receive an email directing you to your edited transcript.
  9. Please refer to the Help Documentation for further support.
